The Nest 3rd generation learning thermostat is one of the latest under the Google Nest thermostat series. This thermostat has been proven in studies to help in savings in utilities.

In line with my aim for this website, below is my review for this green product.

Well-designed aesthetic

Polished steel body that comes in seven selectable colours; white, black, copper, polished steel, mirror black and brass. Comes with a matching trim plate for installation for covering any imperfections left from the previous thermostat.

Easy installation

Installation can be done by yourself in 30 minutes or less. Tell Nest what is your system; “System Match” function will switch on the features that suit your environment. The Nest learning thermostat is compatible with 95% of heating and cooling systems.

Intuitive

In-built “Farsight” motion sensor can pick up your presence across the room and light up its display to show you the time, temperature or weather. Together with the “Early-On” function, the Nest thermostat can start heating or cooling early for your home to reach the scheduled temperature on time.

Match your life-style

Program your desired temperature settings for different parts of the day to help you save money. Subsequently, the “Auto-Schedule” function will automatically generate a weekly schedule based on your desired timings.

The Nest thermostat utilises either motion or phone location data to determine your presence at home. Once you are away, it will turns itself down automatically to avoid heating or cooling an empty home.

The Pros

Ease of installation for this Nest learning thermostat is a common feedback. Another related comment is also the well-designed aesthetic of this product. Another good point mentioned include its easy to use, intuitive software interface. The smooth mobile app interface is also a mentioned advantage by customers.   

Users have also reported actual energy savings upon installation of this Google Nest  thermostat. This is shown by a series of tests carried and summarised in this report conducted by Bonneville Power Administration & Franklin Public Utility District.

The Cons

Activation of programmed settings by the phone proximity and motion sensor are mentioned to be not suitable for areas with wide temperatures fluctuations or households with prolonged absence of occupants. During the period, where the Nest thermostat starts up, the occupant has to endure the warm/cold threshold temperature. Another possible issue arises from old houses where the thermostat is installed at out of the way location like the end of a hall.

The “Home/Away Assist” function has a non-programmable and unknown countdown timer before the Nest thermostat transits from the settings (with occupants) to eco-mode settings (no occupants). This might make its transition difficult to predict and inconvenient for short trips out of the apartment.

There is an issue with the remote connectivity of this Nest thermostat mentioned by some owners due to a faulty Wi-Fi chip with an error code of “w5”. There is a series of troubleshooting steps posted on the help page. However, if these steps fail, reach out to Google’s customer support for a replacement.

Nest Pros offer their customers a warranty extension on the Google Nest Thermostat, Google Nest Thermostat E, and 3rd gen Google Nest Learning Thermostat. This extended warranty is only valid for thermostats sold and installed by Nest Pros in the US and Canada.

For Nest thermostat models purchased from Google or an authorized reseller, a standard warranty is provided:

• Nest Thermostat: a standard one-year warranty
• Nest Thermostat E: a standard one-year warranty
• 3rd gen The Nest Learning Thermostat: a standard two-year warranty

For Nest Thermostat purchased and installed by a Nest Pro, an extended Pro Warranty is offered:

• Nest Thermostat: 2 years of additional coverage for a total of 3 years
• Nest Thermostat E: 2 years of additional coverage for a total of 3 years
• 3rd gen Nest Learning Thermostat: 3 years of additional coverage for a total of 5 years.
